NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 1 – Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba made an impromptu visit to the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani, which has been closed for renovation purposes ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Kenya is co-hosting with neighbors Uganda and Tanzania.
The CS who was accompanied by Sports Kenya Director General Pius Metto sought to ascertain the level of works currently being undertaken at the facility which has been closed to any activity since last month.
CS Ababu expressed confidence on the progress of rehabilitation, giving an assurance that the Government through his Ministry will be hands-on in ensuring that the stadium was ready for inspection.
He lauded the Ministry of defense, contracted to supervise the rehabilitation, for their diligence and keen focus on attainment of desired quality as presented by FIFA and CAF.
The facility together with Nyayo, and Kipchoge Keino were selected as potential venues for the 2027 AFCON, with the Government also set to construct a brand-new football only stadium dubbed Talanta Stadium, at the Jamuhuri grounds.
Nyayo National Stadium will also undergo renovations, though it is not yet closed for works to begin.
